Helen and Thomas WU Performance Hall Opens for CNMAT Concerts
CNMAT is thrilled to have been part of the design and implementation of the newly inaugurated Wu Performance Hall in the Department of Music at Morrison Hall. With the support of Meyer Sound, Wu Hall is an ideal space for CNMAT's future concerts in the Department of Music. This project was made possible with several donors including the generous support of Laurie Wu McClain and Chuck McClain (pictured, lower right, with CNMAT Co-Director Edmund Campion.)
Brendan West, Technical Director, Department of Music and CNMAT affiliate, and Jeremy Wagner, Technical Director at CNMAT, engaged in a design process utilizing 3D prediction and drafting to find a layout and deployment that fit the architecture and performance goals. The system includes the following Meyer Sound components:
The main left/right system consists of two Ultra-X40 paired with a USW-112P each.
The rover system includes a pair of Ultra-X40 over 900LFC on dollies, which can be deployed as a center channel or as a more capable L/R when required.
Side surround coverage is provided by six Ultra-X20 XP, three per side, paint-matched to the wall color.
The rear surrounds consist of a pair of Ultra-X40 with a pair of Ultra-X20 providing "under-soffit" fill support.
The overhead loudspeakers and delays are made up of eight Ultra-X20 XP.
We're pleased with the initial results and are confident that we'll be able to extract even more performance from the system with some extended tuning and experimentation time this summer. This new space is a fantastic resource for our students, serving as both a venue for expression and experiences and as a productive audio laboratory for years to come. We're grateful to Meyer Sound for their generous support in helping make this project a reality.
For this 100-seat space, Meyer Sound loudspeakers helped us achieve:
An aesthetically unobtrusive system with good peak capability, excellent gain-before-feedback, and consistent coverage.
A multi-channel ATMOS-compatible deployment to allow for bespoke multi-channel spatialization and playback of conventional surround formats.
Provision for a pair of "Rover" loudspeaker stacks with extended capability (Ultra-X40 over 900).
True multi-use flexibility to support the following productions:
Live music reinforcement (acoustic/mixed/electronic) in stereo or surround.
Film screenings with stereo up to 7.2.6 surround.
Mixing sessions for audio production, particularly immersive mixing.
Classroom/presentation support for stereo and multichannel content.
Rover system deployment for when a true "rock the house" peak capability is required.
