CUG Presents Ear Foil
The CNMAT Users Group (CUG) will present Ear Foil, a completely improvised concert for cello, violin, voice, and electronics. The work ranges from dense and internal states to billowing, ebullient, and expansive expressions of sound-with some short interruptions in between. Please join us for this free event!

Concert Featuring the Work of Rafal Zapala
As the culminating expereince of Rafal Zapala's Fulbright residency at CNMAT, a concert featuring his work will be performed by the visiting Hashtag ensemble. It will focus on artistic theory surrounding new open forms of music intermediated by technological tools. These forms are explored in the context of written scores and live chamber music performance.

Sound Encounters II — CNMAT & SFCMP
SFCMP and CNMAT are partnering to present Sound Encounters II as part of SFCMP’s in the community series. The event will feature works from several CNMAT artists and includes the world premiere of a new work for percussion and electronics by CNMAT director and longtime friend of SFCMP Edmund Campion, setting the stage for four acousmatic, electro-acoustic and multimedia compositions by Hallie Smith, Jon Yu, Andrew Harlan and Didem Coskunseven.

CNMAT | Lyon Conservatory Exchange
The Center for New Music and Audio Technologies (CNMAT), the UC Berkeley Department of Music, and the Berkeley New Music Project are partnering with the Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique et Danse de Lyon (CNSMDL) in a collaborative concert featuring new compositions by Berkeley and Lyon Composers performed by the ECO Ensemble on December 8th at 8pm. The same new compositions will travel to France in January as part of a featured concert in Lyon at Festival Empreintes.

CNMAT Welcomes Han Zhang
CNMAT welcomes international researcher Han Zhang to begin a 2021/22 research residency.
Han will be working closely with Carmine Cella. The focus of the research will be machine learning based methods for music timbre representation, music creation, and other related areas.
Han recently completed her MS degree in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University.

Selim Göncü’s new composition “Widerklang”, winner of the 2020 Lee Ettelson Award, will be premiered by the Ninth Planet Music Ensemble.

Marlon Schumacher Joins CNMAT for spring residency
CNMAT is pleased to welcome international composer and researcher Marlon Schumacher for a spring research residency. Marlon will be working in collaboration with Professor Carmine Cella and on his own independent research initiatives.
Marlon Schumacher is full professor for Music Informatics at the Institute for Music Informatics and Musicology (IMWI) of the Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Alessandro Frullani Works With Professor Cella on Instrument Augmentation
Alessandro Frullani will be in residence this spring at CNMAT. Alessandro recently finished his masters degree in mechanical engineering. He will be working under the direction of Professor Carmine Cella on the research and development of musical instrument augmentation.
Alessandro specializes in vibration mechanics, acoustics, and psychoacoustics. His master’s thesis featured his work on binaural recording.

Towards the First Model of an Augmented Mbira
As part of his composition, Kobi, which will be premiered at Milano Musica in May 2022 by Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Professor Carmine Cella is working to complete the first model of an augmented Mbira. Carmine has partnered with Ozias Macoo, an instrument builder from Mozambique who has built a special Mbira for the project.
